GIEUs (Global Intercultural Experience for Undergraduates) are project-based service-learning programs. Earn 3 credits taking a semester-long pre-departure course on intercultural learning, conducting fieldwork abroad for 3–4 weeks during spring or summer, and completing a community education project in fall term with your cohort. Pell Grant recipients on GIEU programs automatically receive the GIEU Pell Scholarship to cover their entire program fee. All LSA students with demonstrated financial need—including Pell Grant recipients—are eligible for additional funding through the LSA Scholarships Office’s Global Experience Scholarship.
GIEU is a year-long commitment. You do not apply to a specific site; instead, you apply for an intercultural experience. For the 2018 program, the application deadline is November 5th and the 3-credit GIEU Course (UC 275) begins in the Winter term and extends into the following Fall term. The field experiences last between 3-4 weeks during the spring and/or summer terms.
On the Vietnam program, you will encounter topics relevant to most developing nations— public health infrastructure, economic inequality, and the effects of war. In Ho Chi Minh City, you will volunteer within 4 local community organization’s: Friends for Street Children, Thao Dan, Smile Group HIV-Positive Support Group, and Hong An Center for Disabled People. Through participation, you will gain firsthand inside knowledge from daily work experience, a better understanding of how the organization operates structurally, and how it provides effective outreach to serving their local community.
