GCC Peru — Indigenous Communities vs. Globalization

On-Campus Component: INTLSTD 385/LACS 321 - Indigenous Communities vs. Globalization in South America (3 credits) — Students will take this course during the winter term and learn about the effects of globalization on indigenous communities of South America. For example, should we allow transnational corporations to mine indigenous lands? Should foreign organizations, like US universities, go and “help” indigenous communities? This class will provide the theoretical and analytic tools to begin to answer these difficult questions.

Off-campus component (2 credits): For the field component, students will have the chance to visit the sites and people discussed in class. They will travel with their professor and classmates to Cusco, Peru and surrounding communities for a breathtaking learning experience high in the Andes Mountains. It is helpful for students to have some working knowledge of Spanish, though in all situations there will be instructors and staff who can speak English. Spanish and Quechua are the main languages spoken in Cusco.

The travel component of the course takes place in June so that students will be able to observe two major festivals: Corpus Christi and Inti Raymi. Assignments while traveling in Peru may include interviews/ethnographies, photo essays, museum/tourist site/cultural event analysis.
