What does the inner psychic life of the majnun(a), or mad(wo)man, have in common with the realm of the otherworldly? A lot, actually! For one thing, some figures in the spirit world (the jinn) are considered to be at the root of insanity in many parts of the Islamic and Arabic-speaking worlds. But, as this course will show, stories about insanity and magical beings are also connected in another way: they are cultural tropes called upon to help describe moments of political, economic, social and cultural change and unrest. In this course, we will watch films and television episodes, and read short stories and novels from the Middle East, exploring how and why these seemingly fantastical worlds are so powerful in the cultural imaginary. Your assignments in this class will include several short (250-500 word) responses to our texts and a collaborative podcast.
