This course starts from the baseline assumption that climate change is a crisis of the present that requires immediate solutions. This course studies theoretical and practical attempts to both mitigate and adapt to the climate crisis vis social movements and public policy proposals. Among the questions we will consider is what kinds of policies and at what scale are needed to address the climate crisis? Why has humanity failed to respond adequately to the crisis? What political forces are obstructing effective climate action and what political possibilities are available for activism and organizing? This course will cover the following topics such as the limits and possibilities of the Green New Deal, Pipeline Activism, Climate Leviathan and the Global State, the Degrowth Debate, the rise and fall of the Sunrise Movement, and strategies for fighting the rise of Fossil Fascism.
