Description

Anthropogenic climate change is shaping human migration. This course explores how increasingly, patterns of climate change and migration overlap. Drawing upon multidisciplinary readings and audiovisual materials, students will gain a conceptual framework for understanding the connections between these phenomena. We will study why some people and places are more vulnerable to climate-induced migration than others; whether climate migrants can accurately be called “refugees;” the extent to which the labor market or urbanization could be part of an effective climate adaptation or mitigation strategy; and how states are cooperating on the issues. Course evaluation will be based on active student engagement in the classroom and in online discussions; an argumentative essay; and a final research project that applies the concepts developed throughout the semester to a case of climate induced migration.
