This interdisciplinary course focuses on feminist theory using the context of gender and health. The course explores diverse theoretical frameworks in feminism, and applies those to specific topics such as public health, reproductive justice, mental health, human subject research, pain and stress, and patient care. The theoretical frameworks we will explore include liberal, radical, intersectional, Black, Marxist, and transnational feminism, among others. We will view feminist theory not as a progression through time, but instead as an ongoing conversation in which ideas converge and diverge to illustrate the rich complexity of the discipline. This course provides an important foundation for the gender and health major and minor, and students will leave the course with an enhanced understanding of how difference, power, and inequality shape health-related ideas and experiences.
