Description

This course is an introduction to the fundamental principles in chemistry for beginning students in Earth and Environmental Sciences and related programs, including Program in the Environment. The fundamental principles of chemistry covered in this course include: the states and properties of matter, chemical stoichiometry, properties of gases, liquids, solids and solutions, chemical equilibria, atomic and molecular structure, an introduction to thermodynamics and kinetics, and a discussion of the chemical properties of elements with special importance in earth and environmental sciences. Every lecture includes examples from Earth and environmental sciences.

Course Requirements:

Exams will be conducted through Canvas: they will be available for 1-2 days, but once opened must be completed within a specified time limit.

Intended Audience:

This course welcomes entirely online participation for Winter 2021.

First and second year undergraduates, both non-science majors and students who plan to major in a science. For Earth and Environmental Science majors, this course satisfies one of the two required prerequisites in chemistry + physics + biology + mathematics.

Class Format:

Winter 2021: Lectures: Synchronous but optional and recorded so that students can see the recordings later. Labs: Synchronous and attendance is required.
