This advanced seminar explores the ways in which organized criminal groups challenge and interact with the state. The main analytical tools of this course are drawn mainly from political sciences and economics but we will incorporate insights from sociology, anthropology, economics, and criminology. Although geographically the focus of this seminar is on Latin America (the region with the highest rate of crime-related homicides), we will also use examples from Africa, Asia, Europe, and the US.
Course Requirements:
Students are required to produce an original scholarly research proposal at the end of the semester, as well as serve as discussants for the research projects of their fellow students.
