Description

This course will take an in-depth and factual look at current events as reported in German-language media, and also at the media themselves. It will involve analysis of all forms of media, including social media.

Every week we will focus on one major news event. News topics will include everything from current events, literature, science, politics, major historical anniversaries, human interest stories, sports and the arts. Current events will provide the background information and opportunities for open but guided discussions. We will look at what the news reporting reveals about the culture of the German-speaking countries, and how this culture shapes the reporting of news stories from other countries and cultures in the German-language media. In this context, we will also discuss media bias. Each week, we will include a segment on “This Week in History” as it relates to current events.

The necessary vocabulary and grammar will be provided along the way.

Course Requirements:

Course group projects will include an online press conference, a TV news hour with different kinds of news reports, and mock “live” news coverage of a current event.

Grades will be based on participation, homework, quizzes, presentations/projects, and essays.

Class Format:

Instruction Mode: Tuesday class meetings will be in-person; Thursday class meetings will be remote. Remote class meetings will be held synchronously at the times listed for the class. Students are expected to be available during all scheduled class times.

Learning Mode: Remote class meetings will take place via Zoom. Students will need a reasonably stable internet connection with enough bandwidth for videoconferencing and a computer (or tablet) equipped with a camera.
