This class is focused on writing and academic inquiry. It is aimed at helping students develop
thinking and writing strategies that they will continue to practice throughout their time at
university and, more broadly, as global citizens. Although this class is heavily focused on
composition, in this section we will also be guided by the theme of labor (physical, intellectual,
emotional, etc.). Through our readings, drawn from a range of disciplines and periods, we will
consider how questions about language, work, community, and citizenship intersect with the
ways in which we build, and use, our academic voices. In assignments—three formal papers and
a final creative multimodal presentation—students will be asked to reflect on the questions we
will discuss as a class while practicing the techniques and writing strategies that we will learn.
Students are not expected to have any prior familiarity with these topics to be successful in this
course. Our class will be a supportive and constructive environment, and we will learn together.
