EARTH 119 / ENVIRON 119 is a basic single-term course in introductory geology concentrating on the evolution of the Earth in physical and chemical terms. Reference to the interaction of the external biosphere—atmosphere—hydrosphere with the Earth's interior is an essential component of the course.
Topics covered include:
- plate tectonics: continental collision and fragmentation
- minerals, rocks of sedimentary, igneous or metamorphic type
- tsunamis, earthquakes and volcanoes
- evolution and extinction: dinosaurs and the fossil record
- glaciers, global warming, and climate change
- geologic time
Course Requirements:
Participation is mandatory and measured with a combination of iClicker questions and in-class activities. The evaluation of this course includes quizzes (hosted in Canvas with multiple attempts and unlimited time), three in-person exams and a final project related to topics discussed in class

Class Format:
No asynchronous mode, but lectures will be recorded and available for when students cannot participate in-person
