Description

Germany is a cosmopolitan country shaped by a pluralism of lifestyles. Of its 82.6 million inhabitants, almost 20 million have a migration background. Modern Germany has developed into an important immigration country with relatively liberal immigration rules. This demographic change is set to shape Germany more than virtually any other development. People from different cultures, traditions, and religions are now living together in Germany. Through authentic literary texts, movies, podcasts as well as current newspaper articles, this course will look at diversity in German society and how Germany is dealing with its changing identity.

Course Requirements:

Grades will be based on active participation, homework, quizzes, short essays, and two presentations.

Class Format:

Instruction Mode: Tuesday & Thursday class meetings will be in-person; Wednesday & Friday class meetings will be remote. Remote class meetings will be held synchronously at the times listed for the class. Students are expected to be available during all scheduled class times.

Learning Mode: Remote class meetings will take place via Zoom. Students will need a reasonably stable internet connection with enough bandwidth for videoconferencing and a computer (or tablet) equipped with a camera.

If it is possible to arrange it, the course will include a virtual exchange with a class of German students, during which students will learn more about German culture from their counterparts in Germany and practice their spoken German skills.
