This course introduces the works of the Arab intellectuals writing in Arabic in the 19th and 20th centuries. Variable in specific focus according to the needs and interests of the class, readings in Arabic are selected for translation, analysis, and discussion. The course explores the historical progression in the development of societal and political theories in the Arab world of the 19th and 20th centuries.
Course Requirements:
Ability to comprehend Arabic grammar and to use Arabic-English dictionaries to elucidate modern Arabic writings
Intended Audience:
Students interested in learning about the issues and themes discussed by the leaders of Arab thought in the modern Arab world.
