Description

This course is an introduction to the pedagogy of teaching the Chinese language. As it is a methodology course, its content focuses on methods and approaches with discussion and practice in the direct application of teaching. This course improves the exposure of prospective teachers to the most up-to-date pedagogical theories and categories, including approaches to teaching, methodology, composition of a syllabus, and techniques and implementation of language teaching. More importantly, this course teaches instruction skills in different Chinese language courses at different levels.

The ultimate goal of this course is to educate and help participants become competitive job candidates and qualified teachers for Chinese language teaching at colleges and universities, K-12, and private language schools.

Course Requirements:

Discussion of assigned reading materials, real Chinese class observation, and a final paper. Students also give their own teaching demos and presentations, which are a crucial part of the course content.

Intended Audience:

Students who are proficient in Chinese and interested in developing pedagogy skills for teaching the language. Potential students may be from LSA and the School of Education, as well as teachers and prospective teachers in other educational organizations of our community. Students who are not native or near-native speakers are not eligible for the course.

Class Format:

Section 001 will meet in person on Mondays and Wednesdays with alternating attendance - no more than a few students will be allowed in the classroom at a time. Section 002 is for students who will be participating 100% online and all class meetings will be held virtually.
