Primary Instructor:

ASIANLAN 135 is the first half of an introductory course for beginners with little or no previous knowledge of the Korean language. Through grammar lessons combined with Korean-only recitation sections, the course builds strong foundations in core skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing. The curriculum places a special emphasis on oral communication and incorporates authentic material designed to help students develop cultural literacy in tandem with linguistic competency.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Read and write all the Korean characters
  • Understand and appropriately use the most basic grammar patterns (e.g., polite speech style, formal speech style, location words, counting systems, etc.)
  • Command vocabulary of approximately 400 words and expressions
  • Conduct simple conversations on topics including greetings, locations of objects, daily activities, family, past and future events, etc.

Course Requirements:

Grading is based on class attendance and participation, assignments, project, quizzes, lesson tests, and final oral and written examinations.

Intended Audience:

True beginners with little or no previous knowledge of the Korean language. Students with some background are encouraged to take the placement test to see if they qualify for ASIANLAN 138: Intensive First-Year Korean.

Class Format:

Lecture sessions meet twice a week as a large group to provide analyses and explanations in English and Korean. Recitation sessions are conducted in Korean and meet in smaller groups for more interpersonal and interactive practices.

As a DC (Distance due to COVID) course, all aspects of this course will be fully compatible with remote online learning, however, students will need to be available for virtual class meetings at their scheduled time.
