The course is designed to develop basic competencies in the Filipino language. Grammar serves as the backbone of the course content, while lessons also put emphasis on the practical use of each topic. We put these grammatical patterns in to context by exploring Filipino cultural dynamics and patterns that parallel the topics learned.

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to demonstrate proficiency in the following communication skills. In speaking, the student will be able to successfully negotiate a limited number of task-oriented social situations. In listening, students will be able to understand sentence-length utterances, particularly supported by content referring to personal and social background, and perform very basic language tasks. In reading, the student will be able to interpret written language in areas where vocabulary has been learned. In writing, they will be able to take down dictation and simple notes based on spoken words, and write narrative paragraphs as summary of weekly lessons. Students will achieve oral proficiency equivalent to the novice-low/novice mid-level of the ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview.

Course Requirements:

Grading is based on attendance, class participation including speaking and engaging in skits and dialogues, homework, quizzes, an individual final writing project, and midterm and final written and oral assessments.

Intended Audience:

Students with less or no background in the Filipino language, both heritage and non-heritage students. Students with no or limited exposure to the language.

Class Format:

Section 001 will meet in person on Wednesdays and will meet virtually on Mondays and Thursdays. Section 002 is for students who will be participating 100% online and class meetings will be held virtually on Mondays and Thursdays. The remainder of both sections will be asynchronous.
