Primary Instructor:

This course surveys legal and ethical issues surrounding decisions about pregnancy and childbirth, with a focus on reproductive injustice. We will look at current issues in the news, U.S. case and statutory law on the rights of women, childbearing issues, maternal-fetal questions, as well as laws and practices restricting access to services. We will consider embryonic stem cell issues, individual rights versus societal standards, autonomy versus medical standards and sexual rights issues. We will pay special attention to how the law defines "rights" and the difference between "women's rights" and "reproductive justice." Students will learn to read and analyze legal decisions to better understand how the legal system works to resolve conflicts and navigate social policy issues.

Course Requirements:

paper #1. 5 page judicial decision (20%) paper #2. 5-10 pages. original research (30%) participation/attendance (20%) final (30%)

Intended Audience:

Upper level Women's Studies concentrators, gender and health minors, pre-law students, pre-health students. The course meets the seminar requirement for our gender and health students as well as serves our other majors and minors.

Class Format:

two 1.5 hour meeting times per week.
