This course examines the rise and evolution of political movements that derive their distinct identity from Islam by appealing to its foundational ideas and values and acting in its name and/or in the name of God. Discussions focus on the vicissitudes of such movements in the major areas of the Muslim world from West Africa to Indonesia, Russia, and Afghanistan. After a brief introduction to Islam as a religious, cultural, and political tradition, we will address the phenomenon of so-called “political Islam” in the modern age (19th century-present), its historical antecedents and ideological underpinnings. While the shared ideological premises of Islamic movements are extremely important and impossible to deny, we will pay special attention to the distinctive political and social strategies and agendas of such movements in various regional contexts. The role of the political, social and demographic environments in which regional Islamic movements have evolved and which have given them their distinct character will be carefully considered. The course features recent documentary films and lectures by guest speakers with expertise in different regional manifestations of political Islam and Islamic/Islamist politics. We also plan a visit to an Islamic place of worship in the area and meeting with its representatives.

Course Requirements:

Students will write three papers on topics covered in the course (75 points in all). The first one (worth up to 20 points) will be a review of an academic book or a long article on a topic relevant to the subject-matter of the course. You will need to get the instructor’s approval for the book/article you have chosen to review. Samples of academic review articles will be provided via Canvas this review essay will be 3-5 double-spaced pp. in length. Paper 2 is a research paper worth 25 points and should be 5-7 pp. in length (8 pp. max). The final paper should be broader in scope and length than paper 2, but not longer than 10 pp. (30 points).The students will have the option of taking a sit-down written exam. The remaining 25 points will accrue to students through participation in class discussion (10 for attendance and participation, and 15 for a 12–15 minute class presentation on a topic approved by the instructor).

Intended Audience:

Upper-level undergraduate and graduate students with some background in Islamic studies. For political science students, this course is being offered in the comparative subfield.

Class Format:

Two 90-minute meetings weekly, consisting of seminars and discussions
