This course counts toward the 60 credits of math/science required for a Bachelor of Science degree.
May not be repeated for credit.
Primary Instructor:

This laboratory course encompasses a broad spectrum of common methods and theory essential to Cellular and Molecular Biology concentrations.

The projects include several kinds of microscopy, cellular organelle isolation, gel electrophoresis, Western blotting, column chromatography, and tissue culture, in addition to molecular biology methods such as plasmid construction, transfection, polymerase chain reaction, Southern blotting, and CRISPR-Cas-9.

This course can be used to satisfy requirements for the Cell and Molecular Biology Concentration and the Biology Concentration.

Course Requirements:

Grades are based on two exams, laboratory quizzes, and a term-long grant proposal project that may be completed individually or in a self-organized group, several small projects that are extensions of the lab material, and oral presentations as a group in lab.

Class Format:

The 90-minute lecture each week is used to introduce methodology and techniques that will be encountered in the lab. Two weekly lab sessions are arranged in a project-based format.
