Primary Instructor:

This course will explore the different German-speaking countries within Europe and trace their heritage as well as compare their cultural differences. With the main focus on Austria, this class will contrast each of these German-speaking countries in regards to culture, history, geography, economy and politics. Students will also evaluate the various German dialects provided by a brief, yet thorough, background in the progression of the German language.

The particular emphasis on Austria, will provide students an in-depth look at its unique history and culture. Topics will include an appreciation of Austrian art, music, literature, culinary specialties, and festivities. Upon completion of this course, students will also be able to summarize the events and characters portrayed in Rodgers and Hammerstein's The Sound of Music and compare and contrast the real von Trapp family to that portrayed in the film.

The necessary vocabulary and grammar will be provided along the way.

Course Requirements:

Grades will be based on participation, homework, quizzes, presentations/projects, and essays.
