GERMAN 102 is the continuation of GERMAN 101; please see the description for GERMAN 101 for a description of the general philosophy underlying this course. In addition to the textbook, the course includes a novel about an artist whose new neighbor is a communist kangaroo, and a book describing 365 things to do in and around Berlin. Students will watch a variety of video materials, including the beginning of the film Mostly Martha, the Oscar-nominated short film Ausreißer, and the first episode of Verliebt in Berlin (the German version of Ugly Betty). There are additional cultural readings in English along the lines outlined in the description for GERMAN 101.

By the end of the semester, students will have been exposed to all the essentials of German grammar, which will then be reviewed and extended in the third and fourth semesters. Students will be able to cope with a variety of conversational situations and written texts. In particular, they will have the necessary "survival skills" for a visit to a German-speaking country, as well as a basic foundation for doing intellectual work in German.

Course Requirements:

Course requirements include chapter tests and a final exam, two informal oral tests, a final role play, 4 short essays, class participation, and regular homework assignments.

Note:
1a. If you took German 101 here at UM within the last two years, your Vorsprung iLrn access should still be valid. If not, please email Hartmut for detailed instructions on how to purchase access. This will also allow you to rent or buy the book cheaply. 1b. If you still have iLrn access but you no longer have the book, you will need to buy or rent it. Any version of the 3rd edition will work, new or used, loose-leaf or hardcover, regular or "Enhanced." 2. The 365 Dinge... book is out of print, so we will be working with scans of it periodically during the semester. It's a great book to own if you are considering a trip to Berlin, so we have listed it as a recommended text in case you are able to find a used copy at a reasonable price. 3. Please consult with your instructor before buying any of the other recommended books. You can also email Hartmut at hmr@umich.edu with questions.
