All visual artists use their colors and values to create shapes that culminate in a unified, harmonious whole. The knowledge and skill of the artist is apparent in the finished work. With most media it is the paint vehicles-oils, acrylics, pastel, crayons- that keep the pigment contained and consistent. In watercolor, it is water that releases the individuality of the pigments. Watercolor is a medium of beguiling ironies. It takes great skill to control, yet must appear to be free of control. Physically it needs room to move easily, but without running away. Painting in watercolor requires a disciplined approach that at the same time does not stifle the result. In attempting to master this uniquely diverse medium, you must first become acquainted with its tools and technique, and then practice what you have learned over and over again. Students will be introduced to different techniques used in water media. The use of opaque water-based paints such as gouache and casein will be discussed and encouraged as appropriate.
