Dr. Jorge Moreno Soto, Assistant Professor of Physics and Astronomy, Pomona College
Friday, October 16, 2020
2:00-3:30 PM
Off Campus Location
“Collective astronomy: a blueprint to decolonise the classroom”
In this talk I will share ideas, practices, and principles from Indigenous communities to make astronomy research and pedagogy more inclusive. On the research front, I will challenge the use of violent language in the field of galaxy evolution, and offer alternatives inspired the Pachamama celebration of the Kichwa-Otavaleño people. On the teaching front, I will share my implementation of community-building principles put forward by the Zapatistas in Chiapas, México. If time allows, we will have a mini town hall for the audience to formulate ideas on how to adapt these concepts to your community.
Please note: Should you require any reasonable accommodations to ensure equal access and opportunity related to this event please contact Nicholle Cardinal at ndcard@umich.edu
