Michigan Institute for Research in Astrophysics Presents: “Conversations on Inclusion and Equity”

Dr. Erika Hamden, Assistant Professor, University of Arizona

“Money and power in Astronomy”

I will discuss, within the context of my own experience, the tools and know-how early career researchers need to succeed in academia but are not always taught. This includes how budgets get decided by NASA and congress, how to influence those budgets, and how those decisions end up impacting the lives of students and academics far away from DC. Closer to home, I will describe the importance of knowing about how money and budgets work in the academic world at an early stage in your career. This knowledge in particular can give you an advantage in job searches but more importantly can provide greater direction and power in your own work.
