Research Projects

Our first- and second-year research projects are designed to provide a supportive transition to graduate research. For breadth, we encourage students to conduct each year’s project with different faculty members.

During the spring, each faculty member develops two year-long research projects in which students may participate. Second-year students have first priority in choosing among these projects; they may also approach a faculty member to design a custom project instead. Once second-year students have made their selections, first-year students rank their top choices and are matched with projects by the graduate chair. Research begins in the first two weeks of the semester and proceeds until the following August.

Students and their research advisors/groups generally meet weekly. Each year, students make three formal presentations within the department and write a report on their progress. They are also encouraged to present at relevant conferences to expand their professional network. These requirements provide exceptional training in presenting research findings.
