Alex Varney, BA, 2011

Field of Study: BA, Asian Studies

Graduation Year: 2011

Alex's favorite parts of the Asian Languages and Cultures experience were the close-knit community, the friendships he developed with his classmates, and the top-notch instructors including Mayumi Oka, Shoko Watarai, Junko Kondo, and Jonathan Zwicker.

Since graduation, Alex has served for three years as a Coordinator for International Relations (CIR) on the Japanese Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program where he was involved with international relations, US/Japan Sister City relations, and supporting the larger JET Program community. He has been working at an integrated PR/Marketing agency in New York City since 2015 where he works with international and domestic clients across industries, including a prominent US/Japan Pharmaceutical Industry Organization, a leading Japanese hotelier, international manufacturing firms, and more.

He served as Secretary, Career Development Representative, and Vice President for the JET Alumni Association of New York (JETAANY) and planned high profile events such as the JETAANY Gala celebrating 30 years of the JET Program, and JETs at The MET, a private tour and lecture at the Metropolitan Museum of Art featuring talks by the Curator of Japanese Art at the Met, Director of Noguchi Museum, Director of the Japan Society Art Gallery, and with a special speech by the Ambassador and Consul General of Japan in New York.
