Understanding the interactions of electron spins in semiconductors may enable the development of new devices with enhanced functionality and performance, such as spin-based devices that combine the functionalities of electronic logic and magnetic storage. In this talk, I will describe recent developments in semiconductor spintronics and how optical measurements can be used to probe spin dynamics to study spin-orbit effects, electrically-generated spin polarization, and electron-nuclear interactions.
