Roland Hwang a Lecturer I in the Department of American Culture, Asian/Pacific Islander American Studies serves as president of American Citizens for Justice (ACJ), an Asian American civil rights organization that was founded in 1983 as a result of the beating death of Vincent Chin, a 27-year old Chinese American.  A case that led to two civil rights trials.  ACJ has since moved on to work on disability and limited English proficiency voter access, and racial equity advocacy.

As announced on November 19 by Kresge Foundation, ACJ has been awarded a grant by the foundation to further ACJ's racial equity work.  ACJ has been working with Boys and Men of Color (BMOC) and ACCESS to address racial inequities and anti-blackness primarily in Metro Detroit.

ACJ will receive a grant of $150,000 over a three-year as part of a Kresge Foundation $8 Million grant announcement covering 20 organizations.

The funding will facilitate anti-racism and anti-bias programming, including anti-Asian, and inter-Asian American community racism, and potential responses to racism in the Detroit area.
