Professor John Mitani was one of the  authors on a paper on primate population dynamics in Kibale National Park in Uganda that showed humans are not the only primates "capable of hunting other primate populations to the brink of annihilation." Published in the May 2011 issue of the American Journal of Primatology, this study was selected as among the top 100 science papers of 2011 by Discover Magazine.

Based on nearly 33 years of data at his research site at Ngogo, Uganda, the paper demonstrates chimpanzee population expansion and its relationship with extinction of other species and argues that humans are not the only species to threaten others.
