Obed Garcia, a PhD alum, published an article on the legacy of infectious disease exposure on the genomic diversity of Indigenous Southern Mexicans. Garcia's article comes from his disseration which he completed while obtaining his PhD at the University of Michigan. Garcia published the article with the assistance of other Michigan alumni who rotated through the Bigham Lab.
Obed Garcia is a a Postdoctoral Scholar in the Department of Biomedical Data Sciences at Stanford University. He is currently an Associate Member of the Human Pan Reference Genome Project and the coordinator for the HLA working group of the Clinical Genome Resource. His research focuses on how natural selection shapes human populations–particularly how infectious disease shapes the genome.
