Biology major Fatima Zaidan worked this academic year with Dr. Su'ad Abdul Khabeer on Dr. Abdul Khabeer's research project, Umi's Archive. Fatima assisted in creating alternative text for over 800 items in the online exhibition series, umisarchive.com, in order to make the series more accessible when it is relaunched later this year. As part of completing these tasks, Fatima began to learn more about Islam in the United States and the experience of Black Muslims and decided to present on that for the UROP Research Symposium. In her poster, "Discrimination faced by Black Muslims in the United States," Fatima drew on archival materials that narrate discrimination against Black Muslim women's clothing and headscarves to bring greater awareness of anti-Black prejudice within the US Muslim community.
