At the Crossroad of Muslim and Ethnic Cultures

The Friday Intensives put on by the Muslim Student Association tackle key topics that are imperative for us to address and educate our community about. This Friday Intensive features one of the prominent contemporary scholars of our time, Shaykh Muhammad Adeyinka Mendes.

He serves as the Founding Director of Sacred Service for Human Liberation, Lead Arabic Instructor for Fawakih Institute Atlanta, and as a Lecturer for Madina Institute USA. He focuses on translating and teaching rare Arabic Manuscripts from Black Africa concerning theology, jurisprudence, ethics, spirituality, medicine, and metaphysics.

Because the community is diverse and consists of people from various cultural and ethnic backgrounds, we believe it’s imperative that we discuss the difference between Islam and cultural Muslims. Racism is still alive and well in the community in the form of microaggressions committed towards Muslims with African heritage.

The focus of the event is beneficial and related to the Arab and Muslim American Studies because it brings to light the early establishment of African history in Islam and the emphasis that was put on it. Old Arabic scriptures and sources talk about the diverse community created under the prophet and the way he tackled racism during his time. We wish to remind people of that rich history and how to work towards apprehending racism against Muslims with diverse backgrounds.
