Leadership Development

Barger Leadership Institute is a student-powered, faculty and alumni guided community dedicated to leadership learning beyond the conventional classroom. Members complete a 7-week Leadership Lab to become fellows and gain access to additional project funding, retreats and exclusive access opportunities with Michigan Alumni.

Sanger Leadership Center serves 3000 students across eight academic programs at Michigan Ross and has a number of opportunities open to all students including Legacy Lab, Story Lab and Crisis Challenge.

Internship, Career Support, and Networking

The LSA Opportunity Hub helps students think through and achieve their professional aspirations. Students can access internships, one-on-one coaching, workshops, and courses to help them explore their interests and goals, and hone their networking and job search skills. The Hub also has alumni-hosted internships and funding to help offset the cost of internships. To view position listings, workshops, and events, visit the LSA Opportunity Network:

University Career Center (UCC) is the central career office that supports all students at every stage of their career development.  UCC offers a variety of services for students just beginning to consider their options to those actively engaged in their career pursuits. Students seek out the UCC for job/internship search support; identifying career options through career exploration and  Immersions, as well as getting advice from professionals through alumni networking (UCAN).  All students are encouraged to create a Handshake account to learn more, and make connections with the UCC.

Alumni Association helps students via a variety of networking programs, workshops and events. Face to Face with Michigan Alumni connects students to alumni business leaders and entrepreneurs for career advice. Students learn the do’s and don’ts of networking at the Hail & Hello Workshop and Reception as well as how to network and gain career advice and professional development via approximately 340,000 alumni on LinkedIn. The Alumni Association offers employment and opportunities for University of Michigan students seeking to develop their leadership skills as well.

Major/Minor departments offer resources to students as well, including but not limited to information on internships related to the major/minor, career support/advice and job postings, and networking possibilities with alumni of the major or minor.

Engaged Learning

Student Organizations at U-M are crowded with the kind of thoroughly engaging opportunities a major public university affords, the kind of opportunities that extend the academic experience beyond the classroom, enable students to learn the lessons of leadership, to connect with one another and a myriad of on- and off-campus communities, to explore new worlds, or to simply just have fun.

The Applied Liberal Arts (ALA) curriculum provides a non-departmental home for courses on essential skills for college success and other curricular and co-curricular opportunities for first- and second-year students as they explore majors, minors, internships, and other options for education, leadership, and personal growth.
