About
What is your advising philosophy?
My philosophy is to allow students to feel heard, acknowledged, and supported throughout their college journey. It is important to me that the students I meet with feel respected and supported in their decision-making processes. It is vital to recognize that all students have their own stories and unique experiences to bring to the table, and they should be treated as such. For me, the advising experience is so much more than just discussing courses and academics, it is about learning about students' passions, goals, and experiences and working with the student to best learn how I can support them in achieving these goals.
What was your path to Newnan?
My first experience at Michigan was working in the Office of Undergraduate Admissions where I was working with students and assisting them with the college process. I loved my work there and decided to pursue my master's degree to learn more about all the different areas that I could support students through advocacy and student success. Throughout my master's degree, I was a graduate assistant academic advisor at Eastern Michigan University working with undecided students and College of Business students. It was there and throughout my master's degree that I found my love for working with students and supporting their goals through academic advising.
Why did you join Newnan?
There are many reasons I joined Newnan. One of the first was that I have the opportunity to work with a population of students I am passionate about. I remember what it was like to not know what I wanted to do in College and the immense amount of pressure there was to figure it out as soon as possible. It is rewarding to work with students and dispel the notions that you need to know exactly what you want to do. College is a time for exploration! Another reason is the culture within Newnan itself. All of the advisors and management are passionate about student success and supporting student goals. It is a place full of ideas and creativity continually working to better provide for their students.
Class you loved and why?
In my undergrad, I took a course called Rape Culture and it was one of the most fascinating and impactful courses I had taken throughout my degree. The course centered around victimology and how to support and advocate for victims of Sexual Assault and debunking common myths, notions, and stereotypes about victims. The professor was a trauma counselor herself and was able to provide a unique lens for her students that was victim-centered. I still use the knowledge I gained from this course when working with students or peers that have been through a trauma. I support you!
