About
What is your advising philosophy? I think dreaming is one of the most powerful tools of the brain. Whether consciously or unconsciously, dreaming promotes growth, creativity, and curiosity. Of course, every person dreams differently, and my goal is to support your unique dreams and what you define as success. I will listen attentively with your best interest in mind, support you holistically, and encourage you to dream.
What was your path to Newnan? After graduating from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, I left the cold weather and moved to Texas. I worked at a refugee resettlement agency for one year before realizing that I really wanted to work with and for college students. I applied and got into the University of Texas at Austin in the Education Leadership and Policy Masters Program. After graduating, I got the opportunity to work as a program coordinator to support students from diverse backgrounds - first-generation students, DREAMers, and transfer students to name a few. Additionally, I supported the local community college in creating their first Asian and Asian American Center, which is one of my proudest accomplishments. In my previous role as a Career Education Specialist, I helped create a career peer mentor program for Black and Latine students. I am so excited to expand and provide my experiences at Newnan!
Why did you join Newnan? I joined Newnan because I want to give back to my communities. As a former first-generation college student and child of refugee parents, navigating college was one of the most challenging experiences I have had. I would not be where I am today without the help of holistic student support from dedicated staff and impactful programs. My academic advisors are some of my greatest champions! I give back to my community today by supporting students’ educational dreams.
Class you loved and why? Oral Traditions and History taught by Dr. Martha Menchaca - a course for graduate students. As an individual with an orally passed down language, I have always been fascinated by stories, oral history, and languages. This course further acknowledges and affirms the importance of histories shared through oral customs and traditions. We miss so much of our history because there are only certain historical facts and knowledge that we can learn through storytelling. I hope to one day contribute to archiving some of my cultural knowledge and stories.
