About
What is your advising philosophy? My advising philosophy is to provide students the motivation and integrity to be critical thinkers, be bold with their aspirations and dreams, and spread their wealth of knowledge to all generations.
What was your path to Newnan? It's been a 10-year journey of mine to be at the University of Michigan. During my senior year of high school, I watched my first UMich vs Ohio State football game on tv and the school spirit was inspiring and motivating. I checked out the UMich website and the admission process but unfortunately, I did not have the grades or high school GPA to be considered. I told myself "one day". Fast-forward to my senior year of college, I was applying for graduate schools and decided to apply to UMich's Higher Education program. I was accepted to Rackham Graduate School, however, due to not receiving enough funds to pay the tuition, I had to decline their acceptance. However, my mom said "Maybe one day after you graduate with your masters, you can work for UMich." So again, I told myself "one day". After graduating with my Masters, I applied to multiple positions at UMich (including Newnan) but my applications were all rejected; I continued to say to myself "one day". In late 2021, I came across the application for the Newnan Academic Advisor position and after conversations with loved ones, I decided to take another chance. That "one day" became reality on February 1st, 2022 when I was offered the position. There are two lessons that I have learned during my 10-year journey: 1) Always follow your heart and never give up on your dreams easily. Your "one day" will come 2) Moms are always right
Why did you join Newnan? I joined Newnan because I want to become a stronger and more well-rounded advisor. I worked previously at Indiana University-Bloomington for 2.5 years as an Academic Advisor for the Groups Scholars Program. Additionally, the majority of my work experience is dedicated to working with Student Support/Success Programs and Educational Opportunity Programs (EOP/EOF). My heart belongs to working in the listed offices but I knew that in order to become a stronger advisor, I had to step out of my comfort zone and learn new areas of advising that I have not had the opportunity to experience. I know that being at Newnan I will receive many opportunities to get to learn new areas of advising.
Class you loved and why? I loved my Interpersonal Communication minor courses during my time at WPUNJ. Each course allowed me to learn how to read people's body language and facial expressions. It comes in handy being able to hone these skills as an advisor to make our students feel comfortable as students may be scared/nervous being at a huge institution for the first time and living the college/adult life.
