Suspension is designed to protect a student’s grade point average from falling further, and to provide time and space for students to lay a stronger foundation for academic success so that ultimately they are able to complete their LSA degrees.

Students on suspension cannot take courses at the university, while those on probation can continue their studies in LSA. Suspended students can return to the college after successfully completing a readmission petition, while those who have been dismissed cannot return to the university under regular circumstances. 

Students may be placed on suspension or dismissal even after a single semester of academic difficulty, even if they were not on probation in the previous term. 

The email notifying you of the suspension details the exact requirements. In general, students must take at least a full Fall or Winter semester away from the university, meet with a Student Success advisor at least eight weeks before the start of the semester they wish to return, and submit a written petition at least six weeks before the start of that semester. The Academic Standards Board will review and decide upon the petition.

Students on suspension are generally also asked to take at least two college courses away from the university, and earn B or better grades in them, to indicate their readiness to return to LSA studies. Students are strongly encouraged to meet with a Student Success advisor to discuss these requirements in detail, identify which college courses to take as part of the petition process, and plan out their next steps.

Students are welcome to meet with a Student Success advisor at any point during their suspension status, and are required to do so prior to submitting a readmission petition. Advisors are not here to judge your past grades, but rather to help you think through a plan, explain relevant policies, and offer perspective.
