About Joel S. Siegel Scholarship:

This $2,500 scholarship is awarded annually to an American Culture student with financial need and who best represents the potential for excellence in our program. Calls for applications are sent out to all majors and minors every fall, with the application deadline in mid-November.

2019 Winners:

Ciara Timban will be graduating this year with a major in Public Health and a minor in Asian/Pacific Islander American Studies. Following graduation, Ciara plans to move to Washington D.C. to pursue a career in health policy with a focus on minority and immigrant health disparities. She eventually hopes to come back to Michigan to get her Masters in Public Health and Science in Information. Ciara hopes to use her background in ethnic studies to better shape her understanding of policy and the intersections of health, socioeconomic status, and race.

Aber John (AJ) Espinoza is a junior majoring in Psychology with a minor in Asian/Pacific Islander American Studies. Currently, he serves as the Co-President of the Filipino American Student Association. He is interested in continuing research after completing his bachelors, specifically in a graduate school program where he could combine his training in psychology and his passion for ethnic studies. He hopes to contribute to greater representation of Asian American groups who are typically absent or minimized in scientific research.

Katrina Stalcup will be graduating this year with an honors major in American Culture and a minor in Class and Inequality Studies. During her time at University of Michigan, Katrina has served as co-leader of the Students of American Culture Club, became an Honors College Fellow,  worked as a student leader within the Comprehensive Studies Program and the Maize and Blue Cupboard, and written an honors thesis. Her thesis is a collection of stories from her and her family’s lives to show that intergenerational familial storytelling can capture the powerful cultural practices and wisdoms of the working-class. Katrina intends to get a Masters degree in Urban Planning and Inequality Studies. She is hopeful to work as a policy advisor for policies and projects related to low-income communities.
