The American Culture Undergraduate Studies Committee is pleased to announce this year’s winners of the Richard Meisler Writing Award! This year’s awardees are:

 

  • Anne Boyd, "A Nation That Forget its Past Has No Future: White Supremacy and a Confederate Monument in Phoenix, Arizona"
  • Syd Lio Riley, "Transgender Inclusion in Residential Communities at the University of Michigan"

 

This prize is named the Richard Meisler Award, in memory of our dear colleague Richard Meisler, who served as undergraduate advisor in our department for more than a decade and who was both playful and deeply respectful of the ideas and commitments of our undergraduate students. Because of the generosity of Richard Meisler's family, this Award comes with a $500 prize. Jenny Hong (copied here) will be in contact with you to arrange for the disbursement of the payment of this award. 

 

AC Major Anne Boyd

Anne Boyd is a double major in Political Science and American Culture. She is a senior this year and will be going to Boston University for an American Studies doctoral program this fall! 

 

 

AC Major Syd Lio Riley

Syd Lio Riley is a rising junior with an intended double major in American Culture and Sociology with a submajor in Social Work. They are the Resident Advisor for the Gender Inclusive Living Experience as well as the Team Lead for the Spectrum Center's LGBTQ Oral History Project. His areas of interest include disability, theatre, transgender, and carceral studies. Lio is interested in pursuing a Masters of Social Work after completing their undergraduate degree and hopes to work with LGBTQ youth.

 

 

AC Major Charlie Bingham Jr.

Charlie Bingham a graduating senior majoring in Political Science and American Culture. He has been involved with Central Student Government and the FIlipino American Student Association. He spent his last semester studying abroad in Barcelona, Spain. He plans on going to graduate school for Public Policy.
