Helen Gym has just been elected to the Philadelphia City Council as a champion of public education and grassroots activism. She is a national role model for Asian American activists and a prominent voice (frequently cited by Diane Ravitch and Randi Weingarten) who is shifting the debate on education from standardized testing to community accountability. In Winter 2011, Helen delivered an inspiring keynote address at the “Out of the Margins” Asian American activism conference, which was organized by A/PIA Studies and drew over 500 attendees.
