Community Based Research Fellowship
UROP Community-Based Summer Research Fellowship
The Community Based Research Fellowship Program (CBRF) offers undergraduate students research fellowships to engage in research that directly benefits community-based organizations, programs, and/or specific community groups. The CBRF program was started in 1998 with a grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and funds from the UROP. Most recently, the program has been also funded by generous gifts from Motorola, Redlich and Horwitz Community Scholars Fund, and The Irvin Stern Foundation.
The CBRF program was created with the purpose of integrating research training needs for undergraduate students and research needs of community-based organizations. CBRF students work either directly with a community-based organization in Detroit or Ann Arbor or with a university professor or staff member who participates in a local community-based research project. In either case, research must occur in a community setting such as a community-based organization, human service organization, faith-based organization, or a related program. The project must benefit the organization and community. Students work 35-40 hours each week, which includes participating in a weekly research seminar held on campus.
Program Stipend: $3500
CBRF Program Goals
- To engage students in research projects based on the needs of the communities and the organizations participating in the program.
- To increase the students’ research knowledge and research skill development.
- To increase students’ civic engagement and knowledge of community issues.

- To provide technical assistance to community-based organizations regarding ways to address community needs through research.
