Funding
Funding to support undergraduate research is available as follows:
Supplementary Research Funding for UROP Research Sponsors
UROP provides small research grants to faculty to cover the expense of low-cost equipment and materials, such as lab supplies, photocopying, telephone calls, etc. needed to support UROP student research activity, up to $500 per student. To apply for these funds, complete the Supplementary Research Funding Application Form and return it to the UROP office via campus mail or fax it to 734 615-9000.
Please include a list of the expense item(s) and the estimated cost(s) with your request. If approved, funds will be transferred into the requesting sponsor's University account, usually a discretionary account. This account may not be a federally-funded account. Please indicate the name, address and phone number of an administrative assistant, secretary or other person who our office may contact if we have any questions regarding the transfer of funds. You will be sent a memo indicating the approval of transfer of funds and the amount of the transfer.
Travel grants for Undergraduate Students
UROP has funds to support student travel to national and international professional meetings to present their research. Students can pick up Travel Grant Applications from the UROP office. In addition to this form, students must provide: (1) a copy of their abstract, (2) official confirmation from the conference, and (3) a letter of support from you. UROP awards grants of up to $1000 per student and awards on average 25- 30 travel grants each year. Applications must be received prior to travel. Processing of the grant applications takes from 7-10 days. Students will be notified by e-mail if the travel grant has been approved and for what amount.

UROP Summer Research Fellowships
UROP currently runs summer fellowship programs for students to conduct full-time summer research. Student proposals are due in January. The number of fellowships offered each varies given availability of external support.

National Science Foundation
The National Science Foundation Education and Human Resources Directorate provides funds to support undergraduate students on existing site awards. These supplements can be added to an active NSF research award. Detailed information can be found at: http://www.nsf.gov/dir/index.jsp?org=EHR
Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) provides funding to support involving undergraduate students in research through supplement or site awards. Supplements may be added to any active research award. Contact the cognizant program director for information. See Crosscutting Programs or the CISE/EIA pages for information on site awards. Educational Innovation supports the transfer of recent research into the undergraduate curriculum. See the CISE/EIA pages for additional information.
*Combined Research-Curriculum Development (CRCD) is a joint program of the NSF Engineering Directorate (ENG) and the Computer and Information Science and Engineering Directorate (CISE). It is similar to Education Innovation, but targets upper division undergraduate and beginning graduate level curricula. It also expects involvement with industry. See the CRCD home pages.

National Institutes of Health
The National Institutes of Health offers supplemental grants to support underrepresented minority students or students with disabilities to work on NIH funded research projects. More information can be found at

NASA
In accordance with established Offices of Space Science policies, Principal Investigators on any OSS NASA Research Announcement (NRA) are strongly encouraged to submit an Education/Public Outreach (E/PO) proposal, which can include undergraduate research or innovative education projects.
