- Description: Professor Elaine Gazda, Kelsey Museum of Archaeology and Department of History of Art
Collaborative Work-in-Progress
- Detailed Information: In 1924, in Antioch of Pisidia, a U-M archaeological team explored an imperial temple, “triumphal” arches, colonnaded streets, shops, a Christian basilica, and an imposing aqueduct. Seven students led by Professor Elaine Gazda of the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology and Department of History of Art, set out to restudy the archaeological site in 2004.
The exhibition benefited from collaboration with Professor Klaus-Peter Beier, Director of the 3D Lab at the Duderstadt Center, and members of his staff who assisted the students in producing a Virtual Reality reconstruction of the city. Archival records are displayed alongside updated images and a navigable VR reconstruction. This program highlights a multifaceted interdisciplinary exhibition of a Roman city in Turkey, Antioch of Pisidia, a city once adorned with impressive architectural monuments typical of Roman colonies in the Eastern Empire.
