- Description: A spring weekend retreat for exploring the humanities and arts in a convivial University of Michigan setting
- Detailed Information:
The Epic is a defining source of human tradition. Larger than life, enormous in its panoply of battle and quest, dilemma and decision, the epic sets the stage for a society’s mythical self-understanding. Spanning time and geography, audience and medium, the epic is endlessly recited, endlessly varied, yet endlessly the same, a virtual road map of human diversity and human continuity. For this seminar we have recruited Michigan’s finest faculty to speak to—and illustrate—its variegated presence in dance, literature, architecture, music and other media. In revisiting the epic the Institute for the Humanities is returning to the most venerable traditions of humanistic scholarship: to the study of time-immemorial cultural stories and what they tell of life to their audiences and participants within, and between, cultures. SAVE THE DATES, May 6-8, and plan to join us! Brochures with registration materials are now available. Look for your copy in the mail, or call (or email) us to request a copy.
