U-M Professor of Composition Michael Daugherty will present his violin concerto, commissioned by the Detroit Symphony Orchestra when he was composer in residence, and premiered in 2003. Inspired by the “Detroit Industry” frescos at the Detroit Institute of Arts, Daugherty's violin concerto is a musical tribute to Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo. The two Mexican artists lived in Detroit in 1932, during which time Rivera painted his famous murals and Kahlo worked on paintings such as “Henry Ford Hospital.” Using their artistic collaboration as a point of departure, Daugherty's “Fire and Blood” explores the energies and rhythms of machinery and the human body. The presentation will feature a slide presentation, and the concerto will be performed live by Bethany Mennemeyer (violin) and David Gilliland (piano).
