The Great Lakes’ changing water levels is the focus of a two-day symposium co-hosted at the University of Michigan by the Environmental Law and Policy Center (ELPC) and the University of Michigan Biological Station. Leading Great Lakes scientists and policymakers are convening Wednesday and Thursday, March 26-27, to focus on the ecological, economic, engineering, political and social aspects of changing water levels.

U.S. EPA Region V Administrator Susan Hedman opens the meeting with an overview of “The Impacts of Changing Lake Levels on the Near-Shore.” Lana Pollack, U.S. Co-Chair for the International Joint Commission (IJC) is the keynote speaker at dinner Wednesday.  Biological Station Director Knute Nadelhoffer, ELPC Executive Director Howard Learner, and University of Wisconsin professor Don Waller are facilitating sessions that include

  • Policy Aspects of the Great Lakes System
  • The Solutions Set: Exploring Our Options in the Region
