Avalon Housing and the University of Michigan’s Telling It program have unveiled  the exciting new sculpture created and installed by the youth at Carrot Way Apartments. In the words of the children as they named their sculpture, Roots Taking Flight is their legacy to the place that was, for a time, their childhood home.

Avalon Housing, Inc. is a nonprofit organization created in 1992 to develop, own, and manage Permanent Supportive Housing for County residents who are homeless and who have a mental or physical disability.  Avalon now provides housing and support services for tenants in 260 apartments at 20 sites throughout Ann Arbor, serving more than 425 people a year including about 100 families with children.

Telling It runs weekly afterschool programs for children and youth in Washtenaw County.  Founded in 2002, the program employs innovative techniques to address both academic and emotional struggles by implementing best practices from education and from social work through the filter of the arts.
