The department would like to congratulate Wendy Lin for being named the 2014 Undergradute Recipient of the Mark Chesler Student Research Award. Wendy will receive $250 as a prize for her paper "College Education: Equalizer or Not?."

Honoring the sociological vision of Professor Emeritus Mark Chesler, the Chesler Student Research Award is awarded annually to one undergraduate student whose scholarship contributes to the sociological understanding of diversity, social justice, participatory action research, intergroup relations, or service learning. It carries a cash award of $250, which you will receive in the next six to eight weeks. Also, your name will be engraved on the department’s Chesler Award plaque, which records the history of award winners and hangs in the hallway of the LSA Building’s third floor.

The Chesler Award selection committee concluded that “College Education: Equalizer or Not?” was a well researched paper that demonstrated the importance of social institutions in perpetuating social inequality.  Its core sociological theme, excellent writing, and terrific demonstration of the spirit of the work of Professor Chesler, made it the winner of this year's award.
