EVENT II: All are welcome to attend a multi-lingual book reading by Mr. Yashin, to be held on Friday, March 23, 2012 in the University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA) Multipurpose Room, 4pm.
This is a wonderful opportunity to meet with an internationally-acclaimed author who has lectured all over the world, including in France, Turkey, Cyprus, Italy, England and China, but who rarely makes a stop in the U.S. Mehmet Yashin's work engages with Mediterranean cultures, as well as the idea of "statelessness" and the challenges of establishing himself as a poet of the world while his own country is constantly in the making. Mehmet Yashin is one of the best-known contemporary poets and authors from Cyprus. His work is based upon literary traditions from the Turkish, Greek, and Levantine cultures of the Mediterranean. His books have played an important role in redefining the literary traditions of Cyprus and Turkey. His work has been translated into more than 20 languages and his books have been published in various countries. He has lectured all over the world on topics including the themes of identity, cosmopolitanism, mysticism and literature, the "Euro-Mediterranean," and exile.
