Investigate the complex relationships between the food, energy, and water systems of our society on this 3-credit, 4-week spring program.
Costa Rica, a leader in sustainable development, offers opportunities for hands-on experiences with food, energy, and water systems, including a rich combination of learning environments, working farms, and laboratories.
Much of your coursework will take place in the field, complemented by lectures, seminars, and group activities. Field trips to sites in “wet” and “dry” tropical rainforests take place on weekends. Learn sustainability metrics, gain system analysis skills, and explore technologies like aquaponic gardens, biomass gasification, anaerobic digestion, and precision water delivery.
The program is led and taught by Jose Alfaro of the School of Natural Resources and Environment and Steven Wright of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.
